Crucify the Flesh

To crucify the flesh refers to the means by which we walk in freedom from sin and self. Note that when the Bible talks about our flesh being crucified, it is always in the past tense. When a person receives new life through regeneration, the old man (our sinful nature) is bound to Christ in His death on the cross. This death is the very means by which God has freed us from the bondage of sin. Before a person is born again, they have no choice but to sin because they are children of wrath. After a person is born again, they are a new creation because our sinful nature was crucified in Christ on Calvary. That means that Christ’s victory over sin is now our victory over sin. This is true for every person who believes in Christ for salvation. We now have a choice. To crucify the flesh is to exercise our right to choose obedience to God over bondage to sin. As we learn to abide in Christ, the Holy Spirit empowers us to walk in freedom from sin and self, living lives that glorify God.
