Repentance
Your very first act as a Christian is repentance. The word repent means “to think differently” or “reconsider.” Another definition is “to turn around.” It does not mean “feel bad” or “beat yourself up.” Guilt and shame are very real emotions that result from living in disobedience to God, but they are not repentance. At some point, guilt and shame should prompt you to think differently and reconsider your position. When you are trapped in a hopeless situation and realize that your only hope is God, repent! Turn away from the life that is causing the guilt and shame and turn toward Christ, who is able to save you from the hopelessness that you feel. When you trust Christ to be your Lord and Savior, you surrender your life of guilt and shame to find new life in Him. In that moment of trust and belief, you are born again.
