As we continue to evangelize those who are trapped in sin, let’s keep this principle in mind: those who are in the darkness cannot comprehend the light. Do not try to peddle Christianity as a religion that takes away all of life’s problems, a method that guarantees health, wealth, and happiness, or a taskmaster that shackles us to the law of God. Instead, invite people who are crushed under the weight of their sin to become disciples of Christ. Lead them to the cross where they can surrender their addictions, emotional disorders, and character defects. Take them to Christ, who promised that we would have trouble in this life, but told us not to fear because he has overcome the world. Give people the truth of the Gospel, that in Christ, we are Children of God, and as His children, He provides joy, hope, and peace that will remain through all of our troubles.

Those who are in the darkness cannot comprehend the light. There is no value in trying to explain the benefits of obedience to God and abiding in Christ to those who are dead in sin. Telling an unregenerate sinner that their life will be better without sin is like telling a chameleon that it will be safer in the jungle without the ability to blend in with its environment. Sinners do what they do to protect themselves from the pain that is produced by the world that surrounds them. To those who are slaves to sin, obedience to God looks like suicide. To them, obedience to God looks more like the Trail of Tears than a pathway to peace. To a sinner, addictions, character defects, and emotional disorders are the medicine that treats the symptoms of a wounded soul. They cannot comprehend life without pain, so asking them to live without their medicine is no different than asking a diabetic to live without insulin. What the sinner needs is hope. The sinner who is trapped in darkness needs hope that the God who overcame sin has the power to heal their wounds. Those who are dead in sin need to know that there is true peace, joy, and hope available to all who are alive in Christ.

John 1:4-5

In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness cannot comprehend it.
