The Process
Freedom in Christ is accomplished from start to finish by faith in Him. Is there a process that leads to faith and freedom?

Admit that you do not trust God. This is the first act of repentance.
We cling to sin because it comforts us. Our sins are the bricks we use to build a wall around our heart which protects us from the cold and bitter winds of life. Without the hope of healing the wounds hidden behind those walls, we will never dismantle them. A person must admit that they have built those walls to protect themselves from suffering additional wounds because they cannot trust anyone, not even God.
Yield your pain and fears to God. This is the first act of surrender.
We cannot cultivate faith in God. All we can do is surrender our lack of faith. This is what it means to have a broken and contrite heart, which God will not despise. When we admit our need and acknowledge our dependance on Him, He can begin to work in our lives. We must stop trying to heal our own wounds through sin before we can trust God in sobriety.
Commit to trusting that God will provide the medicine to bind your trauma wounds and heal your soul. This is the first act of faith.
After confessing our lack of faith, we choose to wait on the Lord and trust that He will bind our wounds and heal our infirmities. We choose to trust that He is working to heal us and restore security and sanity.
Refuse to turn back to the sins that numb your pain. This is the first act of resistance.
When depression, anxiety, and hopelessness tempt us to doubt God, we put on the mind of Christ through acts of devotion such as the Jesus Prayer, reading the Psalms, and any other means of turning away from temptation and toward Christ.
Embrace the cross as the mechanism of death to self and sin. This is the first act of obedience.
Christ learned obedience through the things He suffered and we do the same. Do not relent when the pain of exposing our wounds through sobriety clouds the hope of freedom in Christ. Choose to trust God and continue to yield your life and will to His care and control.
Forsake the pain of death and look forward to the joy of life in Christ. This is the first act of hope.
Stay on the cross until God declares, “It is finished.” The agony of sobriety will not last forever, but there can be no resurrection without death. We must endure and overcome the agony of sobriety to receive new life in Christ.
Walk in resurrection power as a child of God in Christ. This is the first act of joy.
When you receive the revelation that it is no longer you who live, but Christ who lives in you, walk in the resurrection power you have received. Boldly approach the throne of grace and live with confidence in the finished work of Christ which now animates your thoughts, words, and actions.
Be sanctified through obedience to God. This is to abide in Christ which is your purpose and destiny.
Live in the freedom of Christ by growing in the grace and knowledge of our salvation in Him. With each passing day, deepen your conversion as the Lord produces the fruits of the Spirit through your life in Christ. Live each day to the glory of God and enjoy His presence forever.
