Our souls have all suffered innumerable injuries. The trauma that resulted has left us in shock. Out of desperation, we tried to stop the bleeding and bind our wounds with bandages soaked in poison. At first, our response was innocent. We were seeking comfort and did not know where to look. Comfort became our priority, and to receive anesthesia, we sacrificed our humanity to escape the pain. We determined that being numb was better than being hurt. Over time, our comfort turned into addiction, bitterness, resentment, anger, apathy, lethargy, lust, pride, and ultimately, hopelessness. Once fully submerged in hopelessness, we turned our backs on God, creation, and ourselves.

Our response to trauma is to seek comfort, but the pursuit of comfort is not natural, safe, or wise. It is the product of selfishness that springs from the wounds of trauma. True healing cannot begin until we subject ourselves to the scrutiny of God. This is not introspection. We cannot diagnose ourselves. This is evident by the depression and anxiety that clings to those immersed in self through introspection. The scrutiny of God is not self-analysis; it is love. God sent His Son, Jesus Christ, into the world to become the medicine that binds our wounds and heals our infirmities; therefore, to be healed is to be in love with Christ. In Him, we are safe to lose ourselves because pain and death are swallowed up in sacrificial love. The acceptance, safety, and significance that were destroyed by trauma are restored in Christ. Those who are in Christ no longer have to seek comfort because God sent the Comforter, His Holy Spirit, to dwell in our hearts. God’s sacrificial love administered through the Trinity is the medicine that restores our humanity. To be healed is to be loved, and God is love.

Psalm 147:3

He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.
