The Flesh

The flesh is the seat of irresponsible and immoral desire. It causes us to do things leading to guilt and shame. In short: it is our sinful nature. The flesh is animated and draws its life from sin. In no way does that eliminate personal responsibility for the bad decisions we make. It simply explains why we sin. When Christ sacrificed His life on the cross, he became sin and put to death that which animates our sinful desire, our flesh. Everyone who has put their trust and hope in Christ to be saved, has not just been saved from Hell. We are also set free from bondage to the flesh. Our responsibility is to walk in the freedom we have received by surrendering to Christ when we desire to sin. That is accomplished by faith and there are many ways to exercise that faith when we are tempted. Choosing to surrender to Christ verses indulging sin is the process of crucifying the flesh.
