DISCIPLESHIP
Theology Is Not for Academics. It's for Everyone.
Jude 3
"Beloved, although I was very eager to write to you about our common salvation, I found it necessary to write appealing to you to contend for the faith that was once for all delivered to the saints."
Discipleship at Obey and Abide is not a program. It is not a class you complete or a box you check. It is the ongoing, lifelong work of being conformed to the image of Jesus Christ, grounded in sound doctrine, rooted in the historic Christian faith, and lived out in the ordinary moments of everyday life.
WHAT DISCIPLESHIP IS
Our first and only goal is to make disciples of Christ. Everything else flows from that. We believe that a deep, rich theological education is not the exclusive domain of seminarians and pastors. It belongs to every believer. When God's people understand who He is, who they are, who Christ is, and what salvation means, the result is not pride. It is worship. It is gratitude. It is a life increasingly shaped by the glory of God.
We are Reformed and confessional, with deep roots in historical Christianity. We hold the Bible to be the inerrant, infallible, inspired, and authoritative Word of God, normative for all people, at all times, in all places. Our discipleship is shaped by the historic creeds, confessions, and catechisms of the Christian faith, not because they are infallible, but because they are grounded in the Word that is, and they represent centuries of the church thinking carefully about what Scripture teaches.
We major on the things that unite Christians. The great doctrines of God, man, Christ, and salvation are our focus. Secondary issues such as infant baptism, church polity, and eschatology are real and important, but we leave those conversations to your local church, where they belong.
Making disciples who make much of God.
THE FOUR PILLARS WE BUILD ON
God
Who He is, His attributes, His sovereignty, His glory
Man
Who we are, the reality of sin, our need for grace
Christ
The person and work of Jesus, the incarnation, atonement, resurrection
Salvation
What God has done, how we respond, what it means to be reconciled
These are not electives. They are the foundation. Everything else in the Christian life is built on a right understanding of these four realities.
The Foundation
ROOTED IN HISTORY
We are not inventing a new Christianity. We are recovering an old one. The historic creeds, confessions, and catechisms of the church, documents like the Apostles' Creed, the Nicene Creed, the Westminster Standards, and the London Baptist Confession, are not replacements for Scripture. They are tools forged by faithful men who wrestled deeply with what Scripture teaches. We use them as guides, guardrails, and nourishment for disciples who want to grow into the fullness of their faith.
Jude 3 is our commission. We want every person we disciple to be equipped to contend for the faith, not with arrogance, but with clarity, conviction, and love.
The faith once delivered to the saints.
HOW DISCIPLESHIP DIFFERS FROM BIBLICAL COUNSELING
Both discipleship and biblical counseling are rooted in Scripture and aimed at transformation. But they serve different needs.
Making disciples who make much of God.
Biblical Counseling
Discipleship
Primary Focus
Addressing specific struggles, sin patterns, and hindrances to reconciliation with God
Starting Point
A presenting problem or life crisis
Goal
Freedom from life-dominating sin, reconciliation to God and others
Process
Structured weekly sessions with homework
Primary Focus
Deep theological education applied to everyday life
Starting Point
A hunger to know God more fully
Goal
Christlikeness, doctrinal grounding, and the ability to defend and live the faith
Process
One-on-one or small group, ongoing and relational
It is also worth noting that discipleship and counseling often overlap. A person walking out of life-dominating sin needs both freedom and grounding. We are equipped to provide both, and we walk with people through the whole journey.
WHAT TO EXPECT
Whether you meet one-on-one or in a small group, discipleship at Obey and Abide is always in person. It is also not limited to scheduled sessions. We understand that life does not wait for appointments. When hard moments hit, we are available. That is what it means to walk with someone, not just to meet with them.
You can expect:
Honest, theologically grounded conversations about God, life, and faith
Engagement with the historic creeds, confessions, and catechisms of the church
Reading, reflection, and assignments that move learning from the head into the heart and hands
A community, however small, that is committed to your growth and God's glory
A consistent pointer back to your local church as the primary community of your faith
Discipleship is relational, not transactional.
FOR THOSE NOT YET CONVINCED
If you are not yet a Christian but something is drawing you toward God, you are welcome here. We will not give you easy answers to hard questions. We will give you honest ones, grounded in Scripture and the historic faith. We believe that sincere questions deserve serious engagement, and we are honored to walk with anyone who is being drawn toward God, wherever that journey leads.
You have hard questions. Good.
THE LOCAL CHURCH
We have a deep conviction that the local church is God's primary instrument for the ongoing growth and care of His people. Our discipleship ministry is not a substitute for a faithful, Bible-believing church. It is a compliment to one. If you are not currently connected to a local body, we will help you find one. That is not optional for us. It is part of what it means to disciple someone well.
Discipleship was never meant to be a solo project.
BOOK AN APPOINTMENT
If you are ready to go deeper, to move beyond surface-level Christianity into a faith that is historically grounded, doctrinally rich, and glorifying to God, we would be honored to walk with you.
The faith once delivered to the saints is worth knowing. Worth living. Worth defending.
